Mathematical Models

Description

An introduction to a range of important topics in applied mathematics.

  • Introduction and Traffic-Flow Modelling (1 lecture by Andrew Lacey)
  • Continuum Mechanics and Elasticity (6 lectures by Penny Davies) tensors, kinematics; balance laws and governing equations; constitutive laws; fluid dynamics; solid mechanics (elasticity).
  • Fluid Mechanics (6 lectures by: David Pritchard, Iain Stewart, Ineke De Moortel) Newtonian fluid dynamics; non-Newtonian fluids; introduction to magnetohydrodynamics (MHD); applications of MHD - waves in the Sun's atmosphere; geophysical fluid dynamics.
  • Mathematical biology (5 lectures by: Rachel Norman, Steven Webb, Jonathan Sherratt, Nick Hill, Mark Chaplain, Martin Bees) population ecology; evolution of disease; biological waves; electro-cardiophysiology; modelling of cancer.

The course will be assessed by three assignments.
